About the Study Abroad Bursary
The Study Abroad bursary is an alternative support package if you are on a study abroad year as part of your course. This payment is available in place of The Manchester Bursary. You will be automatically assessed for the award based on your Student Finance assessment, so you'll need to apply for a financial assessment for that academic year.
The amount you receive, is dependent upon your household income assessment.
- Residual household income of up to £31,000: £2,000 cash award
- Residual household income of between £31,001 and £43,000: £1,000 cash award
Scheme eligibility
Essential criteria are conditions you must meet to be considered for this scheme. Students who do not meet these criteria will not be considered for this award.
To be eligible, you must meet the following:
- Be studying an eligible undergraduate degree course at the University of Manchester;
- Have submitted an application to your regional student funding authority (Student Finance England, Wales, Northern Ireland, or Scotland), had a full household income assessment, and consented to share your student finance information with your university;
- Have a household income of less than £43,000 per year.
Application and selection process
How to apply
You do not need to apply for this Bursary. All eligible students will receive the Bursary.
Selection process
The University will do an automatic assessment for the Bursary during the first six to eight weeks of semester 1 and will email you in November if you are eligible for the award.
If you have not been contacted by December and think you are eligible for the Bursary please contact our team through the online enquiry form.
If your household income should fall by 15% or more in an academic year, you may be able to apply for an in-year reassessment with Student Finance England to reassess your household income and eligibility for the Bursary.
Please note you will not receive the Bursary for the relevant academic year if your student finance assessment has not been completed by 31st May of that academic year (e.g. for the 2026/27 academic year the deadline will be the 31st of May 2027).

Sharing your household income information
When completing your Student Finance England application, you will need to ensure you have selected the option to consent to share your household income information with the Universities you have applied to or hold an offer with. Without this we cannot access that information, and we will not be able to consider your application for this scheme.
